'BOUT SAL ~ born to a family of travelling gypsies in 1978, I lived a life of bliss until I was kidnapped by a gang of marauders at the age of six. Those years of forced labor in the salt mines taught me the meaning of hard work. By the age of 12, when I managed to escape my captors, I began a cross country journey which eventually led me to the sandy beaches of San Diego. There, I learned to be resourceful, finding my food in grocery store dumpsters, washing my ragged clothes at the beach and eventually building my first camera out of some duct tape, a shoe box, and a bag full of tooth picks. Thus began my love affair with photography. This new obsession began to soften my jaded view of the world and I began to see beauty everywhere I went. Whether it be a beautiful woman or the peaceful aura of a plastic bag, floating in the wind, I documented it all on film. Years later, I began a small photography business which has afforded me a small degree of comfort, and all though I no longer get my food out of a dumpster, every picture I take is imbued with a part of my soul and a piece of my past. This is my art, this is me. :-) |
